The best part of waking up is coffee in your…oh no, ohhh geez, gotta get to a toilet…oh boy, hurry, hurry, oop don’t forget my phone…it is going to be quick.
If you enjoy starting the day with a good cup-o-joe then you probably have noticed that after the first few sips sometimes you need to quickly find a toilet. For some, that is really the only way they know the coffee is working.
So what is it about coffee that makes you have to poop?
Rest assured that you are not the only one that experiences this sometimes welcomed, sometimes unwelcome side effect of coffee. Although it does not happen for everyone, a great deal of people feel the need for a bowel movement after drinking coffee. There is scientific evidence behind this, so don’t think this is a super power that only you have.
Is it the caffeine? The short answer is no, but it helps.
The very fact that coffee is a stimulant and makes us more alert when we drink it definitely can factor into the increased urge to poop when drinking it because it awakens our nervous system, however, the caffeine is not the main reason for the need to find your porcelain throne. In fact, decaffeinated coffee also causes the sudden turd rush.
The main reason behind poop-mageddon is because coffee stimulates a peristalsis movement. Peristalisis is defined by dictionary.com as: “The progressive wave of contraction and relaxation of a tubularmuscular system, especially the alimentary canal, by which thecontents are forced through the system.”
In terms of your body, the peristalisis initiated is the relaxing and tensing movement that kicks the digestive system into gear causing it to excrete. Depending on how it effects your body the coffee can over stimulate the peristalsis movement causing you to become very impatient with the man who is taking his time in the Starbucks bathroom.
Coffee is known to work so well as a laxative that it is often prescribed to help with constipation. Some people use it as part of their daily routine to keep their bowel movements consistent, which is good for the body.
If you find yourself unable to control your bowels after a sip of the powerful poop brew then it is recommended that you try switching to tea for your caffeine fix. Tea can also stimulate a bowel moment, but it is not as fierce as that magical little brown bean.
If you are the type of person who is afraid to poop at work then it is strongly recommended that you either have your coffee at home in the morning or get a good morning poop in before you drink the free stuff at the office.
